Benefits of Green Tea for Dialysis Patients

The popularity of green tea nowadays has increased not only because of the nutrients it contains but also for the reason that green tea has the capacity to fight against the conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and also helps kidney dialysis patient. Before we discuss the benefits of green tea for dialysis patients, let us have brief information about what is dialysis in a kidney patient.

Dialysis:

Dialysis is done for the patient suffering from kidney disease or problems. Generally, in the case of kidney failure, the kidney is unable to filter the blood as it should. As a consequence of this, waste materials and toxins accumulate in the bloodstream. So, here comes the role of dialysis which is performed to remove waste products, excess fluids from the blood.

Who Requires Dialysis?

Patients with kidney failure need treatment through dialysis for the life. In acute conditions like kidney injury, very high BP, diabetes, or hyperglycemia, the person may come to a stage of chronic kidney disease that may also require dialysis for the treatment.

Types of dialysis: There are two ways through which the affected person gets the dialysis:

  1. Hemodialysis
  2. Peritoneal dialysis

1. Hemodialysis: In the process of hemodialysis, a machine is used to remove blood from the body, and then the taken-out blood is filtered through a dialyzer that is actually an artificial kidney. The cleaned blood now is returned to the body. This whole process takes 4 to 6 hours of time and is done in a hospital, specialized dialysis Centre, for 3 times a week. In some cases, hemodialysis is done at home 4 to 7 times a week and a few hours each session, the best time would be just before sleep.

After hemodialysis, a person may experience some symptoms-

  • Pain in chest and backbone
  • Headaches
  • Itchy skin and rashes also
  • Muscle cramps and spasms
  • Restless legs syndrome

2. Peritoneal dialysis: In peritoneal dialysis treatment, a dialysis solution is made to filter the blood through the help of tiny blood vessels which reside in the abdominal lining. Actually, the dialysis solution is a cleansing liquid that contains water, salt, and other supplements. Minor surgery is done before three weeks of this treatment, in this surgery process a soft, thin tube is inserted through the belly into the peritoneum and where the catheter stays permanently. Peritoneal dialysis is usually done at home. There are two techniques to perform this treatment:

  • By Automated peritoneal dialysis in which a machine called a cycler is used.
  • The process of Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is implemented manually.

After peritoneal analysis, a person may experience some symptoms and complications-

  • Skin infections around the catheter.
  • Peritonitis- When Bacteria get inside the abdomen through the catheter.
  • Fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

It also helped patients with severe kidney diseases and general kidney problem.

The benefit of green tea for dialysis patients-

It has been observed that the effects of antioxidants like polyphenol which are present in Green tea prevent hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid in the blood) that causes chronic kidney diseases and are also responsible for preglomerular arteriotherapy. The advancement of diseases related to kidney disease was also stopped by the use of regular green tea consumption because consumption of green tea activates the Notch1-STAT3 pathway. Green tea for dialysis patients is also helpful in dialysis patients because it also contains ECIG (Epicatechin gallate) an antioxidant that prevents kidney damage. Regular consumption of green tea for over several months reduces oxidative stress and inflammation in a dialysis patient.
