Can kidney patients eat chicken?

Eating a nutritious diet is important to keeping your body healthy and active. This becomes even more important when a person is suffering from any kind of disease, such as chronic kidney disease.

For a kidney patient, dietary restrictions depend upon the level of kidney damage. Patients at an early stage of kidney disease have different restrictions than patients with severe kidney damage, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

The most common question asked by patients following a renal diet plan is whether kidney patients can eat chicken ? Well, here is some information on why the intake of chicken is restricted for renal patients :

Protein : People with kidney disease do not require a large amount of protein intake. Because the kidneys are not able to eliminate waste and toxins at this time. This waste will load kidneys to work even more. But, as you know, protein is essential, so you have to take protein ultimately. Instead of consuming animal based sources of protein, switch to plant based sources such as lentils.

Potassium : Consuming chicken can cause severe levels of potassium to remain in the blood. Leading the kidneys unable to regulate potassium efficiently. high potassium affects the heart's muscle work or irregular heartbeat causing heart attack in renal patients.

Acid load : Consuming animal based food can raise the acid load and put stress on kidneys. When a person has kidney disease, the kidney becomes weak and makes it difficult to remove acid build up in your blood, which makes the kidney’s situation worse.

Cholesterol : Most of the cholesterol doesn’t come from the diet but is produced within our body by the liver. Only a small amount of cholesterol is needed from the diet, and most animal protein contains high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat. High cholesterol levels increase the risk of heart disease and stroke which may be life-threatening for kidney patients.

Phosphorus : Consuming animal protein with high concentration can result in increased levels of a hormone called fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which is harmful for our blood vessels. Leading to heart attack and sudden death in kidney patients.

Karma Ayurveda suggests consuming a renal-friendly diet to fight kidney disease. A renal diet includes foods and drinks which are healthy for the kidneys and help eliminate toxic waste. Ayurvedic diet for kidney patients is low in sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein. Remember: Diet modifications for each person vary according to their age, body size, symptoms, stage of kidney disease, activity level and other health conditions.
