Is kidney failure common among diabetic people?

It is found that diabetes and kidney disease have a connection. With rise in blood sugar level for a consistent time, people witness changes in their kidney function too. However, it is a long with-standing cause that generally harms your kidneys over the years. So, certainly, you have time to look after your health.

One of the causes of kidney failure is diabetes mellitus, a condition characterized by high blood glucose (sugar) levels. High blood sugar levels damage the millions of tiny filtering units within each kidney. These tiny blood vessels within the kidneys (called nephrons) suspend the blood filtration process or perhaps result in faulty filtration. Thus, your kidneys are not able to eliminate toxins the way out. Having too many toxins in your blood can become life-threatening.

Around 20 to 30 percent of people with diabetes develop kidney disease, but not all stages to kidney failure, though. Another name for the condition is diabetic glomerulosclerosis. People with diabetes are also at risk of other kidney problems, including narrowing of the arteries to the kidneys, called renal artery stenosis or renovascular disease.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Diabetic

For people with diabetes, kidney problems are mostly diagnosed during a regular check-up by the doctor. This can be type 2 diabetes usually. At first, the only sign is high protein levels in the urine, but this has no symptoms. It may be years before the kidneys are damaged severely enough to cause symptoms. Some of the symptoms may include:

  • Fluid retention (edema of the legs or face)
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

High blood pressure is yet another risk factor for kidney disease, and people with diabetes are prone to hypertension. The renin-angiotensin system is a hormone system responsible for regulating blood pressure and fluid and electrolyte balance, as well as systemic vascular resistance. The system is also responsible for the development of diabetic nephropathy. Other risk factors that are involved in diabetic nephropathy include cigarette smoking and a family history of diabetes and kidney disease. Diabetic nephropathy progresses steadily despite medical intervention. However, treatment, such as Ayurveda, can significantly slow the rate of damage.
