Kidney disease is a major concern for Indians and the people
around the world. Kidney disease often remains undiagnosed in the earlier
stages when the function can be recovered reversed with the help of a diet
only. Unfortunately, people are left with only limited option dialysis or
transplant. The key to treating kidney disease is to keep the kidneys strong
and healthy in the earlier stages. Regular testing for kidney disease is
important especially in those who are at the risk.
Manage your blood sugar level
People with diabetes or a condition that causes high blood sugar,
develop kidney disease in their life maybe not now, but sometimes in the
future. Diabetes can affect blood circulating in the glomerulus, the filters of
the kidneys. Changes in kidney function become visible within 4 to 5 years of
diagnosis of diabetes and within 30 years, people with type diabetes may
develop late-stage kidney disease.
Monitor blood pressure
High blood pressure is the second leading cause of kidney damage.
If high blood pressure occurs along with other conditions, such as heart
disease, high cholesterol, and diabetes, the impact on the kidney can be more
severe.
High blood pressure or hypertension over time weakens the blood
vessels in the entire body, especially that of the heart and the kidneys and
reduces their functionality. Extra fluid because of impaired kidney function
may raise blood pressure, even more, creating a cycle that progresses to kidney
failure.
Stay active and fit
Regular exercises can help you shed weight besides keeping the
risk of chronic kidney disease at bay. It makes you control your blood pressure
level, boost your heart function, and most importantly kidney damage.
Walking, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, etc can leave a
positive impact on your mind and the body. There are a few of the Yoga asana
that can help strengthen your kidney function and improve health.
Eat a healthy diet
People who are obese or overweight develop more health problems
and tend to have a risk of kidney damage. So, they should manage their diet
wisely. A healthy diet should be low in sodium, potassium, calories, fat, and
cholesterol. This dietary regulation may help reduce the risk of kidney damage.
Focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables as they are low in potassium and
phosphorus, such as beans, whole grains, berries, etc.
Drink plenty of fluid
There is no fixed rule about drinking a minimum of eight glasses
of water each day, but drinking is a good habit. How much water you should
drink each day is dependent on your lifestyle and health. Conditions like
climate, gender, exercise, health, pregnancy, etc will help decide your daily
water intake. Also, those who had kidney stones earlier should drink a little
bit more to prevent stone formation in the future.
Water makes the body
hydrated and doing that will also help eliminate waste through urine. Water
helps release sodium and toxins from the body.
Don’t smoke
Smoking damages the blood vessels of the body. This hampers the
blood flow throughout the body and to the kidneys and the heart.
Smoking on a regular basis will increase the risk for the heart,
lungs, liver, and kidney cancer. If you stop smoking, it decreases the risk but
will take years to return to your original health.
Avoid OTC pills
If you regularly take over the counter medicines, it may cause you
serious health complications. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as
ibuprofen, naproxen, and a-like salts can cause chronic pain, headaches,
arthritis, and kidney-related issues.
People with no kidney-related problems have no such risk, but
possibly this could be risking their health. Talk to your healthcare provider
about the same.
