An overview- Polycystic kidney disease
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a hereditary illness in which cysts grow in the kidneys in large numbers. These cysts get filled with fluids. If the cysts continue to grow or get too large, the kidneys will be severely damaged. Polycystic kidney disease causes the kidneys to enlarge and lose their functions with each passing day. The progression of the kidneys eventually leads to kidney failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Broadly speaking, there is no cure for polycystic kidney disease to date. However, Ayurvedic treatment for polycystic kidney disease can put a break on the growth of polycystic kidney disease and the deteriorating kidney functions.
Types of polycystic kidney disease
The cause behind polycystic kidney disease is a genetic mutation. This gene mutation is inherited from one or both parents. Polycystic kidney disease is mainly divided into two types:
1. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD): This disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. ADPKD requires just one parent with the mutant gene. Parents with this disorder have a one-in-two probability of passing the mutated gene to their children. The severity of symptoms and the age at which they appear vary, but they commonly appear between the ages of 30 and 40. ADPKD is a chronic condition with symptoms that tend to worsen over time. Eventually, the formation of multiple cysts leads to kidney damage and kidney failure.
Symptoms of ADPKD
- Kidney cysts
- Pain in the back and the side
- Headaches
- Liver and pancreatic cysts
- Urinary tract infections
- Abnormal heart valves
- High blood pressure
- Kidney stones
- Brain aneurysm
- Reduced kidney function
- Painful and enlarged abdomen
Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD): This disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of cysts in the kidneys and liver and problems in other organs, such as the blood vessels in the heart and the brain. ARPKD requires both parents with a genetic mutation. The severity varies from person to person. The signs of ARPKD usually begin before birth, but some people do not develop symptoms until later in childhood.
Symptoms of ARPKD
- Enlarged kidney
- Hypertension
- Breathing problems
- Growth problems
- Excess urine production
- Enlarged spleen
- Heart and lung defects
- Anemia
- Blood in urine
You should see a kidney specialist or an Ayurveda practitioner if you or a family member has been diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease or if it runs in your family. They can assist in recommending a safe and successful treatment.
Diagnosis for polycystic kidney disease
Ultrasound is the least invasive, least expensive, and most reliable approach to diagnose polycystic kidney disease. A CT scan (computed tomography) or an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be used to detect some small cysts that an ultrasound cannot detect. The volume and growth of kidneys and cysts are measured and monitored using MRI. Genetic testing may be used to diagnose polycystic kidney disease in some cases.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited health disease, and there is no such allopathic treatment to cure this hereditary disease. The available allopathic treatment is harmful, injures the kidneys, and worsens their condition. In contrast, Ayurveda treatment is the most natural and safest treatment to cure the disease. It focuses on working on the root cause of the disease. Therefore, Ayurveda is the only last resort to treat it and protect it from kidney failure.
The ayurvedic treatment includes herbs and other natural components to compose ayurvedic medicines. These herbal medicines are a powerhouse of medicinal properties that effectively cure the problematic factors causing polycystic kidney disease. They are completely safe and free of any harmful effects.
Along with ayurvedic treatment for polycystic kidney disease, many supportive treatments can be done to control symptoms, help slow the growth of the cysts, and help prevent or slow down the loss of kidney function in people suffering from polycystic kidney disease. These include the following:
- Do regular exercise for 30 minutes or more
- Follow a kidney-friendly diet
- Drink a lot of plain water throughout the day
- Lose weight if you are overweight or obese
- Get a sound sleep for at least 8 hours each night
- Carefully control blood pressure
- Control blood sugar level
- Reduce stress
- Quit smoking and alcohol consumption
As aforesaid, Ayurveda works on the root cause of the disease and has the potential to cure the disease. In addition to this, Ayurvedic treatments and therapies rejuvenate the kidneys and revive their essential functions again.
