What is Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited disorder connected to the development of clusters of cysts within the kidneys. The growth of numerous cysts causes the kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. However, cysts are noncancerous but they impact how a normal kidney functions. With time, such round sacs start to fill themselves with fluid and blood which ruptures.

People with PKD may have cysts in other parts of the body as well such as in the liver and anywhere else in the body. This can cause serious problems or complications such as high blood pressure and kidney failure.

Some comorbidity linked to PKD are highly preventable with PKD treatment in Ayurveda. Besides, lifestyle changes and treatment care can help bring down the damage to the kidneys.

The two major forms of PKD include autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive PKD. Both forms are distinguished based on the pattern in which it is passed in the family lines and the age of onset. Autosomal recessive rarely occurs and is lethal early in life. While the treatment may depend upon the type of PKD, PKD treatment in Ayurveda can assure fast and perpetual recovery in adults.

PKD is a fairly common disorder affecting people of all genders. The autosomal dominant form of the disease is much more common than the other form.

Autosomal dominant PKD: This type of PKD appears late in life in adults between the ages of 30 and 40 and so called adult PKD. But some children may also have PKD.

In order to develop PKD, only one parent needs to have the genes to pass the children. With only one parent affected, there are only 50% chances of getting the disease. This form of PKD affects people more than ARPKD. The mutations in the PKD1 and PKD2 genes lead to the formation of numerous cysts on the kidneys.

Autosomal recessive PKD: This form of PKD is less common than ADPKD. The signs and other comorbidities start appearing shortly after the birth or even before that. Sometimes, the signs do not appear until childhood and those children may survive long. In order for the child to have this disease, both the parents must have the necessary genes to begin mutation. The involvement of PKHD1 plays a vital role in the development of ARPKD in children.

If you start PKD treatment in Ayurveda early, likely the genetic mutation can be stopped and you can be prevented.

What are the symptoms linked to PKD?

Based on the type, there are different signs and symptoms linked to the advancement of PKD.

Many people live for years without any serious signs. Until the cysts grow 0.5 inches or larger, the kidney functions normally.

  • blood in the urine
  • frequent urination and more or less urine output than normal
  • pain in the sides
  • pain or tenderness in the abdomen
  • frequent urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • kidney stones
  • pain or heaviness in the back
  • pale skin color
  • fatigue
  • joint pain
  • nail abnormalities
  • high blood pressure

Children with autosomal recessive PKD may have different signs such as:

  • high blood pressure
  • UTI
  • frequent urination

When to see a doctor

Although the signs in babies and children may connect to other problems also, it is important to let your doctor diagnose the root cause of the problem. Connect with your nephrologist as soon as you experience these signs in your or your children.

Ways to prevent PKD

Keeping the kidneys healthy is the foremost thing you can do to manage or prevent PKD. This can be achieved by switching to a renal-friendly diet and adopting a lifestyle that fits your kidney needs. Apart from this, you need to regulate blood pressure.

Ways to manage high blood pressure

  • Take the blood pressure medications as suggested by your doctor.
  • Eat a low-salt diet and include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Quit smoking, if you do.
  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week.
  • Limit alcohol use.

If you have polycystic kidney disease and you're planning to have children, a genetic counselor can help determine your risk of passing the disease to your baby. Along with, consult an ayurvedic nephrologist to know how PKD treatment in Ayurveda will be beneficial.
