Nephrotic syndrome is a group of conditions that causes an abnormal amount of protein in the urine. The condition causes damage to the clusters of blood vessels in the glomeruli and tubules that prohibit excess protein from passing into the urine. As a result, you may lose more protein through the urine than otherwise.
Albumin, which is the main protein in the blood, prevents fluids from skipping into the cells and tissues. But during Nephrotic syndrome, when you lose too much albumin, there is too much fluid that may accumulate itself in the tissues. Hence, swelling is apparent in those patients who suffer Nephrotic syndrome. Edema or swelling in feet, ankles increased the risk of other medical conditions.
Treatment for Nephrotic syndrome may include treating the underlying condition that caused it and preventing the progression of kidney disease. Nephrotic syndrome elevates the risk of infections and blood clots due to protein loss, so treatment is essential. At Karma Ayurveda, we suggest patients’ herbal medicine for Nephrotic syndrome. The treatment focuses on Ayurvedic medications and dietary changes to help prevent these complications.
What are the signs and symptoms of Nephrotic syndrome?
The signs and symptoms of Nephrotic syndrome may vary depending upon individual state or health. Varied signs and symptoms may include:
- Severe swelling (edema), particularly around your eyes and in your ankles and feet
- Foamy urine a result of excess protein in your urine
- Weight gain due to fluid retention
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
When to see a doctor?
Make an appointment with the doctor if you have signs or symptoms that point to nephrotic syndrome or any kidney-related problem.
What are the causes of Nephrotic syndrome?
Nephrotic syndrome is caused by damage to the clusters of tiny blood vessels within the kidneys.
The glomeruli filter the blood as it is made to pass through it. The waste and impurities filtered may be passed down through the urine while the important substances like protein are reabsorbed and sent back to the blood. Healthy glomeruli do all the function with grace and keep the right amount of albumin in the blood. The unhealthy kidneys, on the other hand, are unable to prevent protein from seeping into the urine. When damaged, glomeruli allow an abnormal amount of blood protein to leave your body, leading to Nephrotic syndrome.
Many possible causes
Many conditions may cause glomeruli to damage over time, leading to nephrotic syndrome, including:
- Diabetic kidney disease - Diabetes affects kidneys and their function and also glomeruli leading to diabetic nephropathy.
- Minimal change disease - Minimal change disease results in abnormal kidney function, but when the kidney tissue is lab tested and examined, it appears to be normal. Hence, the exact cause of minimal change disease is not known.
- Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis - It is the scarring of some portion of glomeruli. Mainly it develops because of some genetic effect or certain medication for no apparent reason.
- Membranous nephropathy - It is the thickening of the membranes within the glomeruli. The thickening is due to the antibodies buildup in the kidneys made by the immune system. It can be associated with conditions such as lupus, hepatitis B, malaria and cancer,Systemic lupus erythematosus - It is an inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues. As a result, it leads to serious kidney damage.
- Amyloidosis - It results when amyloid proteins may accumulate in the organs and damage the filtering system of the kidneys.
Ayurvedic viewpoint
Ayurveda is of the viewpoint that kidney failure results in because of damage to the minute body channels called mutravaha srotas. This channel is responsible for passing the urine in and out of the kidneys. In case there is any obstruction in the channels or mutravaha srotas, the kidneys may not accept the urine or pass the urine. This is why treating the obstruction in the channels is important to improve and strengthen the kidneys. There are numerous herbs in the herbal medicine for nephrotic syndrome approach that help cure this condition.
Herbal medicines are known to help patients with nephrotic syndrome by improving the fluid retention capacity of the kidneys and preventing oxidative stress. The treatment also ensures that creatinine levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels also remain maintained.
Preventive measures
- Do not consume too much protein as it can pressurize the kidneys.
- Take a diet minimal in potassium, phosphorus, and sodium.
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Work on your stress level.
