So, the answer is yes you can have tea, but only simple tea and that too in moderation. You can have a small cup of tea in the morning with your breakfast. But remember to ask your dietician about the right ingredients to choose from.
There are different types of tea available in the market nowadays. But choosing the type of tea that only lifts your body health and not raise the risk of ESRD is the thing to consider. For instance, green tea is not recommended during the CKD diet plan because of its risk in the progression of CKD. Certain blends in green tea are not healthy to be consumed by the patients. A kidney patient has to be cautious of certain nutrients such as iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, etc. and many ingredients of green tea may interfere with the kidney function.

While only limited types of herbal teas made from mint, chamomile, stinging nettle, dandelion roots are safe for kidney patients to drink.
Bottled tea also contains sugar which is highly harmful even than the caffeinated sodas. They may also contain phosphate additives for flavor enhancement which is not suggested during end-stage renal disease. A single ounce of brewed black tea contains more than 88 mg of potassium which is too high.
If you still wish to include tea in your diet, you can have simple tea made from tea leaves and two-three spoons of milk (only if milk is recommended by a dietician). Make it at home with less sugar if you are diabetic. If you wish to have lemon tea, you can add two to three drops of lemon to it.
