The global pandemic is not hidden from anyone now. It affected the
people of china only but later affected the whole nation. It was WHO (World
Health Organisation) that named novel coronavirus as COVID-19. Most of us must
be aware by now that how it affects and what can be the results but what we are
escaping to know that it can worsen the health and medical case of a dialysis
patient. As we all know that coronavirus attacks people easily who have low
immunity levels.
A kidney patient who is undergoing the procedure of dialysis will have
lower counts of immunity level. The patient must be battling with kidney
disease and henceforth becomes more vulnerable to overburdened with the
complications of this serious infection. India witnessed a second death case
because of coronavirus in the lady aged 69 years old from Janakpuri, Delhi.
According to the news published on the web portal of ‘India Today’, the news
stated ‘She was a known case of diabetes and hypertension. Her sample was
collected on March 8. Her condition worsened on March 9 with the development of
pneumonia and she was shifted to the intensive care unit. Her sample also
tested positive for Covid-19. Since March 9, she was having respiratory
fluctuations and was provided ventilatory support. However, due to co-morbid
conditions, she died on March 13 at RML Hospital, Delhi as confirmed by the
treating Physician and Medical Superintendent’
It is a true statement that COVID-19 affects the respiratory system
first and is a major threat but it is equally important to understand the fact
‘it can affect the body of kidney failure patient.’ As seen in the case of 69
years old lady, she lost her life because of the medical history of diabetes
and high blood pressure. Both these factors affect the functioning of kidneys
and make them fall under numerous clinical conditions. COVID-19 is a serious
threat to the lives of a dialysis patient and can complicate the treatment of
renal failure. Kidneys are the prime organs that come in contact with
everything that the body consumes either by eating or inoculating.
The treatment of COVID-19 includes heavy doses and strong chemically
made medicines that kidneys may support or not. In such a delicate condition,
the risks of losing lives by the addition of pandemic novel coronavirus may
worsen the condition. This virus can be said that is an acute loss to the
functioning of multiple organs including the failed kidneys in a kidney failure
patient.
Here are some verified facts about the pandemic COVID-19:
- First: 91.7%
of SARS patients with Acute Kidney Failure died. (Source: Studies of
Kidney International in 2005)
- Second: After
the SARS outbreak, the reports of WHO showed that the virus was found in kidneys’
tubules.
- Third: If
the group of viruses penetrates and replicates, the condition can be
lethal and fatal. (Source: Kar Neng Lai, University of Hong Kong)
Understanding the effect of COVID-19 on kidney failure patients:
Looking at the epidemic graph of coronavirus, thousands of people have
lost their lives by now. The antidotes are being made across the globe and
hopefully, we are likely to get that soon. 90% of the patients suffer from
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and for the same; it is considered
only as of the problem in respiratory problems. The mucus occurring at the time
of cough, cold & flu blocks the passage of airways and reduces the supply
of oxygen to the organs.
These blocked passages then fail to deliver the oxygen
needed by kidneys and henceforth may become a case of kidney failure. Almost 6%
of SARS patients end up with Acute Kidney Failure or Acute Kidney Injury.
Kidneys that filter gallons of blood every day get affected by this novel
coronavirus or CVOID-19 reaches the stage of Acute Renal Failure. An
average-sized human kidney consists of 8, 00,000 nephrons or the distilling
units may get in call of inflammation leading to the fatal conditions.
